The Tudor manor house is a lived-in medieval manor house of the de Olepennes, dating from 1450 to 1616, with minor early 18th century improvements.  Set in a romantic valley in the heart of the Cotswold Hills, Owlpen Manor boasts a magnificent Tudor Great Hall, the Jacobean wing and elegant Georgian Little Parlour and door case of 1719. Also, in the Great Chamber, are unique painted cloth wall-hangings. And you can listen for the ghost of Queen Margaret of Anjou which has visited the manor since the War of the Roses.
.
“The most beautiful place in England” is how Owlpen is described in Fodor’s Great Britain Complete Guide 1999.

Arts & Crafts restoration work was carried out by Norman Jewson in 1926, after the manor had remained a “Sleeping Beauty”, uninhabited for more than 100 years.  Much has been done since and much has been made available for viewing.  The Mander family collections.  Tudor wall paintings.   Furniture.  Textiles.  Beadwork and pictures. Cotswold Arts & Crafts furnishings & plasterwork.
.
The formal gardens are on seven hanging terraces of the 16th and 17th centuries, with topiary yews, box parterres, old roses and the mill pond.

“The earliest complete garden in England” wrote Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, and “a dream….among dark, secret rooms of yew, biding in the slope of the valley” wrote Vita Sackville-West.

With lovely walks and fine manorial outbuildings, including Grist Mill, (1728) with cupola, the Court House (1620s) and an elaborate Victorian Church, many hours of pleasure can be spent on the estate.  Miles of beech woods, historic parkland, and spectacular bluebells in the spring will bring pleasure for all ages.
