| Bourton-on-the-Water
is one of the Cotswold Hills' oldest and most treasured villages. Dating back more than
2000 years - even prior to the Roman military camp at nearby Salmonsbury - its name having
evolved from Burghton and, probably, Boroughton, to a present day attraction for thousands
of visitors every year. Many buildings and cottages, built with local stone, date back
several hundred years. The village's extensive and eventful history can be obtained at
several shops around the village, the library and, of course, the local Tourist
Information Centre. A 'walk' through the village is available on their official website at
www.bourton-on-the-water.co.uk.
The village is a particular favourite for ramblers with many delightful walks, including the famous Fosse Way, passing through or surrounding the village. |
| The Old Manse Hotel was built in 1748 by the Baptist Congregation of Bourton-on-the-Water, as the residence for their Baptist Ministers, at a cost of £350. The first minister to reside there was the Reverend Benjamin Beddome, who ministered there far over 50 years. Renowned for his biblical knowledge and prolific hymn writing, some of his `Poems for use as Hymns' can still be found in hymn books in this country and in America. The house was built during a period of wealth among the Cotswold Hills. The wool trade had made many prosperous and their prosperity helped many of them to be generous. The houses and churches of the area are rich, solidly built and mottled with the famous local limestone. The Old Manse remained in the ownership of the Church until 1938, when the property was sold off privately, subsequently changing hands several times, until, in 1963, it was extended and transformed into an hotel. |
