1439 - the year a truce was signed between England, Burgundy and France. King Henry VI was to keep the land he had won but not the title King of France. He later reneged on the deal and much suffering was to follow. At this time, The George Inn is recorded as already accommodating Pilgrims on their travels and as a beerhouse was no doubt serving the community as a thriving hostelry. Contrary to popular belief, the hotel was not named after any King but after the golden collar of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. This badge depicts St. George on horseback slaying the dragon.
The Rendezvous THE RENDEZVOUS

This relaxing and airy dining area is amongst the most popular in Chipping Sodbury. Catering for those in the mood for a full meal with all the trimmings, or those ready for just a snack whilst shopping or passing through, whilst....

....the adjoining café allows visitors to relax in slightly more intimate surroundings. The menus include a fine selection of wines to compliment your meal and a wide variety of coffees is also available.

The Bistro

Much has happened to the George over the years, but nothing so bad as to actually close for some years up to 1996 before it was re-opened and refurbished. While many of its valuable and unique fittings were either removed for use elsewhere or stolen, most remain to this day, and of course, the original oak beams are clearly in evidence everywhere.

THE LONGROOM
RESTAURANT

By the time you reach the Long Room Restaurant at The George, the old world ambience has settled on you like a warm blanket. Dining is a relaxing and memorable experience. Beautifully laid place settings give everyone the feeling of being someone special, and the service on our visit was quite exceptional.

The a'la carte menu is large and well proportioned with just the occasional hint of the exotic. Starters begin at £3.50, but a genuinely delightful offering at £6.55 is the Mussels & Asparagus. Fresh mussels poached in white wine and asparagus-cream and topped with chopped parsley. Main courses include many favourites, not least the grill, and while the Aubergine Cannelloni at £7.50 was thoroughly enjoyed, among this excellent selection I am wholly pleased to recommend the Noissettes of Lamb at £11.95 - tender noissettes marinated in orange and rosemary and topped with a rich orange butter.

We have no hesitation in recommending this stylishly furnished, yet pleasantly informal restaurant.

A traditional English Sunday lunch is served between 12 noon and 3.00 p.m.
It is always wise to book for this event.

The George Hotel also caters for weddings, private parties and business groups up to 70 people. These can be arranged with a buffet or set menu.

THE LOUNGE

Much more can be said for The George Hotel if space was unlimited, however, it must be said that the friendliness of the the owners, Mike and Georgina Harrington and their staff deserves a special paragraph.

From the oft rushed barmen and barmaids in the "pub downstairs" where snacks and beer satisfy the lunch-time rush, to the busy waitresses serving those with more time in the Longroom Restaurant, on our visit the service and manners remained impeccable.

While mentioning the pub downstairs, we should also mention that Live Music is presented every week-end and regular mid-week games such as the Pop Quiz are also proving popular.
