Not booting directly to Desktop
Q. When I turn on my PC it always used to open on my desktop. Suddenly I am getting a blue screen with my name and the message, "To begin click your user name" Everything then goes as normal to my desktop.

Is there any way I can get things back to what they were?

A. Yes. Go to Start||Settings||Control Panel||User Accounts and click on
"Change the way users log on or off" and uncheck "Use Fast User Switching".
Taskbars, Toolbars - Notification Area (Sys-tray)
Q. I am a novice and am totally confused by the terms toolbar, taskbar and quick launch bar. I have no idea what the differences are. This becomes important as I try to understand how to edit the area at the bottom right of the screen that has the clock, speaker settings, printer icons etc. What is this area called? How do I delete items from this area?

A. The Taskbar is the grey bar running along the bottom of your Desktop. This will display any programme you are using. The small area at the extreme right of the Taskbar is the Notification Area (Sys Tray in Win98), which displays various icons... clock, volume control etc. Icons are often added here by programmes you install. They could have a bearing on how fast your PC runs, depending on the type of programme. Generally, however, only when the programmes they represent are actually running will they affect performance. You can hide these icons by right clicking a blank spot on the task bar (to the left of the Notification Area), selecting "Properties" and checking (enabling) "Hide inactive icons". You can also choose which active icons to hide by clicking "Customize" and selecting what you want under "Behaviour".
You add Quicklaunch yourself which becomes the left-hand section of the Taskbar. Right click the Taskbar, selecting "Toolbars" and enable "Quicklaunch". This is useful for those files you open often within programmes such as MS Word, Excel et al - by dragging a shortcut to the file onto the Quicklaunch.
If you think you have too many icons in the Notification Area you can stop these programmes launching at startup. First check the configuration of the programme concerned and see if it can be adjusted there. [This is the correct way to do it and sometimes means reinstalling the programme during which process the option is displayed]. If not, go to Start||Run and type msconfig in the rectangular window. Hit OK. Select the "Startup" tab and there you will see all the programmes that run when booting has finished. Uncheck those you don't want. You will be asked to restart when you are done.
Old programmes don't run
Q When I try to run pre-XP programs on my XP Professional, nothing happens. I keep clicking on the icons, trying to run them under the 'run' command, but nothing helps. No error messages - just nothing. The weird thing is, they used to work without any problems but now they aren't even considering it. One is a dictionary made for Win 95 and the other is Civilisation II, also made for Win 95.A. Total silence is usually because no drivers are recognised. Uninstall and reinstall. This usually cures the problem. Let Windows choose the driver. If this doesn't work, visit the manufacturers' web sites where you can probably download updated drivers. If you can't find these then XP may still be able to help with the "Compatibility Wizard".

To Start the Program Compatibility Wizard, click Start||Help and Support||Fixing a problem<||Application and Software Problems. Under Fix a Problem click Getting older programs to run on Windows XP, and then click the Program Compatibility Wizard link in the instructions. Follow the instructions in the wizard. You can also go to this page for a full explanation:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/appcompat.asp

Unfotunately, there are some programmes you just can't help!

Delete 'undeletable' file
Q. I came across 3 unnecessary files listed as being filed under My Computer. I don't know how I could have filed them there in the first place but in any event I want to delete them. If I go to explorer & click My Computer I can't find them there. If I select them in the search panel & click delete I get the message."Cannot delete file: Cannot read from source file or disk".

A. Right click the files/folders and make sure they are not 'Read-only". If they are not and you are sure you want to be rid of them, try this... Open a Command Prompt window [Start||Programs||Accessories||Command Prompt] and leave it open. Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE, click OK. Click on the 'Processes' tab, highlight 'Explorer.exe' and click 'End Process'. Leave Task Manager open. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in. [Type CD <the directory path> and hit Enter]. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete and hit Enter. [You will need to do this for each file separately]. Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager.
Desktop Icons Disappeared
Q. I have somehow lost all my Desktop icons. How can I get them back?

A. Right click on the Desktop, in the pop-up menu select "Show Desktop Icons".If they are still missing, right click on the Desktop, choose..., "Properties||Desktop||Customise Desktop". You can add or remove icons such as My Computer, My Documents and My Network Places.
Task Manager - Toolbar missing.
Q. I brought up Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) but found the toolbar has disappeared. The only way I could close it was to use 'Escape'. How do I put it back to normal?

A.  This is caused by double clicking the blank area off to the right of the tabs. To put things back, just double click on the top rail (border).

My new PC won't boot.
Q. My new PC won't boot. It starts normally but after about 10 seconds the screen goes blank and nothing else happens.
A. For a new PC, in the first instance you should contact the manufacturer for support. In the meantime, try hitting F8 as soon as bootup starts to access Safe Mode. Select 'Last known good" from the options and reboot. If you are unable to resolve the problem this way then you can enter the BIOS by hitting F1 as soon as you start to boot. In the BIOS find and change the setting to detect the CD-ROM first. Insert the WindowXP CD in the CD-ROM drive, exit BIOS - saving changes - and let your PC boot. Your PC will boot from the CD which will give you the chance to reinstall or repair your installation. (Don't forget to go back into BIOS and reset it to Default).

If you still have problems you can try using the Recovery Console. This, however, is generally thought to be for advanced users only so I would recommend that you read up on its use in "Help and Support". Better still... visit  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q307545  where step by step instructions are available and much more information besides.

Excel - Tools/Properties
Q. In Excel, when I click on "Tools" and then "Properties", I get a fatal error and Excel closes down.

A. This is a Microsoft glitch which can be instantly corrected by installing the SR-2 update. Download it from:   http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;151261. You will need to have already installed SR-1. If you have not installed SR-1, you can follow the advice given at the above location to retrieve it.

My Documents ...can't access
Q.  I have recently installed Windows XP Home and now can't access "My Documents". All I get is the message "Access denied". Is there an easy solution to this?

A. This looks like an 'ownership' problem. It is a bit long so I suggest you visit Microsoft Support at:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421 where you'll get your answer with instructions on how to go about it.

Outlook Express - Can't open attachments
Q.  I am unable to open attachments when I receive them. This has only started to happen since I installed XP.

A.  Open Outlook Express. Go to "Tools||Options" Click the 'Security' tab and uncheck... "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that may potentially be viruses." If this is not the problem, then check your firewall configuration and make sure it is not set to block all attachments.

Outlook Express - Hyperlink off website fails
Q.
When I am visiting a web page and click on their e-mail (contact us) link, Outlook Express goes into a continuous loop and produces dozens of windows with the error message, "....Outlook express is not properly installed". OE works fine at all other jobs. I am using OE6.

A.  This could be simple, like OE is not registered as your default browser and nor is Microsoft Outlook. This can be corrected by opening OE, going to "Tools||Options" and clicking on the General tab.  At the bottom you will see "This application is NOT the default Mail Handler." Next to it is the button to make it default. Click on this.

If this does not work, it probably means a trip to the Registry, but before you do that, go to Start||Run and type in the window - with the quotes "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg (yes there is a space before /reg). Hit OK. Try sending a message off a WebPage. If OE6 still does not work, back up your registry and then do the following.

1:  Start||Run type regedit and hit OK. Go to the following registry key -
                                 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express.
2:  In the left pane click Outlook Express. Two values should be displayed in the right hand pane: 'Default' and 'DLLPath'.
3. DLLPath is probably missing so you'll need to create it.
4:  On the tools menu, click Edit||New||String Value. A box appears in the right hand pane with New Value#1 highlighted.

5. In this box type DllPath and hit 'Enter'. Double click the new DllPath.
6.  A window opens. In the 'Value Data' box type the path to the msoe.dll file on your computer. This is probably C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msoe.dll. If it is not there, make a search for it and type its path exactly.

7. Hit OK and exit Registry.

OE6 should now behave normally.

Remember, any typing or changes you make in the registry are saved the moment you exit. In XP create a restore point in "System Restore". Any other OS, always back up the registry before editing it.

Installing XP Home on another machine
Q.
I have installed Windows XP Home on my PC but when I tried to install it on my laptop I was instructed to 'activate' it, Microsoft say I can't. Surely this can't be right?

A.
Microsoft do not permit you to load XP on more than one PC. If you did not read it before you installed, go to Start||Run and type eula.txt and there you can read all about it.

Format hard-drive for Windows XP
Q.
After all kinds of problems, I am trying to format my C: drive but XP won't let me format. It says I have to shut down all programs using this drive. How do I do this when I need it to format? Even from a command prompt or running XP in safe mode I can't see how it is done. How do I format my drive? I have been told it is possible.

A.
Yes, in a manner of speaking, it is possible, although not a total reformat. You must boot from the Windows XP setup CD. Insert the CD in the CD ROM. Restart your PC and immediately press F1 (You may need to press 'Delete' instead, as on some machines) to enter the BIOS. Set the CD-ROM as the first disc to be detected. Exit BIOS and boot. It will detect the setup CD automatically. As you follow the on-screen instructions, you will be given the choice to carry out a clean installation. This formats the disc. You will, of course, lose everything on your hard-drive.
"My Briefcase" is missing!
Q.  I have just upgraded to Windows XP and can't find "My Briefcase". I used this a lot in Windows 98. Does it exist in XP and if so, can you help me find it?

A.  Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32. Look for a file named "syncapp.exe" and double click it. (If you can't find it, use "Search"). The 'My Briefcase' icon will appear on your desktop. When you double click on this, full instructions on how to proceed will be displayed.

Deleting files off a CD-RW
Q.
I have just upgraded to Windows XP and used the CD-RW for the first time. However, I cannot delete any files I copy. Surely this can't be right?

A.
It is surprisingly complicated for what is supposed to be a Read/Write facility. Do the following - taken from Microsoft support centre: Double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. In My Computer, right-click the CD recording drive, and then click Open. Windows displays a temporary storage area where files are held before they are copied to the CD. Files or folders that are located in the temporary storage area are listed in the Files Ready to Be Written to the CD box.  In the CD Writing Tasks pane, click Erase this CD-RW. The Welcome to the CD Writing Wizard dialog box is displayed. After you click Next, the Erasing the CD dialog box is displayed and the progress bar displays the progress of the process. When the process is finished, you receive a message in the notification area and you can use the CD-RW disc. Note: Not all CDs are erasable. If the CD that you are using is not erasable, for example, then this feature is not available.

Clock... removing.
Q. Can I remove the lock from the Systray?

A
. XP lets you do this. Right click a blank area of the Taskbar and select Properties. Under Notification area, deselect "Show the Clock" then click OK. Remember, though, you lose the date as well. As you know, resting your cursor over the clock brings up the date.
"Run" command - Clearing entries
Q.  In my "Run" command (Start/Run) I have accumulated more than a dozen bits and pieces, most of which I have long forgotten what to do with. Is there a way to clear this box, or edit it to leave just those commands I use regularly?

A. Yes. It means a trip to the Registry (Start||Run and type regedit). Go to...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

You can delete which entries you no longer want.  DON'T FORGET TO BACK-UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE YOU MESS WITH IT!

Volume Control - System Tray
Q.  I remember in Windows 98 I had a volume control on the sys tray (Notification Area). Is this available with XP?

A. Yes. Right click a blank spot on the taskbar then Properties. Make sure "Hide Inactive Icons"  is disabled. If that doesn't bring it up, go to Control Panel and in "Sound and Audio Devices Properties", enable "Place volume icon on the taskbar".

Restricting Log on Time
Q. Is it possible to restrict the amount of time my children spend on their PC so I can share it more equally between them?

A. I can picture the problem and arguments kids can cause when they share a PC. However, you can only restrict the amount of time with XP Professional. XP Home does not have the facility.

If you have XP Pro click Start, Run and enter gpedit.msc.   Go to Computer Configuration||Windows Settings||Security Settings||Local Policies||Security Options. In the right pane, locate the entry for Network Security: "Force logoff when logon hours expire".

You can set logon and logoff times to suit each person's ration: A simple Monday Friday ration might be...

net user kidnumberone /time:M-F,17:00-17:30.

MS Word Crashes
Q. Without warning or any apparent input fom me MS Word suddenly crashed, locking up the system, and the only way out was to reboot. Now, when I try to restart Word I get the "Illegal Operation" error message. In 'Details' it gave an invalid page fault in module MSO9.DLL and the number 015f:308c9c03. I have tried everything and asked about but without any luck. Can you help.

A. This error is almost certainly a currupt MSO9.DLL file and/or WINWORD.EXE. To fix the problem you should replace these two files.

Go to Start||Search||Files and Folders and enter mso9.dll and hit "Search". when it comes up, right click on it and select 'Rename'. Call it mso9-old.dll and hit 'Enter'. Do the same for the Winword.exe file, renaming it Winword-old.exe.

Now go to Start||System||Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs. Select Change/Remove and highlight Office 2000. (You will be asked to insert your Windows XP Disc. You will then need to select "Repair errors" in the Maintenance Mode. Click 'Finish' and all should now be okay.

Thumbnail View - Size of.
Q. I have been told that I can increase the size of the thumbnail image in 'Thumbnail View' when opening folders. Is this so, and if so, how do I do it?

A. Yes you can. Go to the Registry and navigate to either of the following keys depending on your PC's setup.

Current user only:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer

All users:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer

Add a new DWORD value called ThumbnailSize and give it a hexidecimal value that is between 32 and 256. A value of 32 will give you the smallest thumbnails, and 256 will give you the biggest. You will need to reboot for the new setting to take effect.Don't expect a screen size thumbnail! The difference between the smallest and largest is about x2.     DON'T FORGET TO BACK-UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE YOU MESS WITH IT!
Taskbar Greyed Out - XP Pro
Q.  I installed Windows XP Pro and changed my desktop apperance from XP style to Classic style. When I changed back, my taskbar remained grey. No matter what I do it will not get its colour back. Can you help?

A.  (Thanks to Kelly Theriot MS.MVP for her help with this) This problem is not as uncommon as I thought when I was first asked about it. What happens is that the visual system setting becomes unchecked and for some users the Windows and Buttons become greyed out under 'Appearance'. To resolve this...

Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services/Themes. Set to "Automatic". Also check your settings here:

Start/Administrative Tools/Services/Terminal Services/Log On. At the bottom ensure that "Hardware Profile Original Configuration" is Enabled.

If the above doesn't apply/nor help:  only Windows Classic is listed under 'Appearance'. To resolve this...

1. Right click on the desktop and choose Properties.
2. On the Theme tab, choose the Windows XP.
3. If this option is missing, you may choose 'Browse'... go to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna.theme
4. The Luna.theme is the theme of the Windows XP.

If 'Luna.theme' is missing: Go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Expand Files:  Luna.MS_ and Luna.TH_

You can also certainly resolve this issue by visiting the following website, copy/paste and apply any of the workarounds available but epecially....Restore Luna Theme (Line 187)   http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

DWORD Value - Registry
Q.  In your answer to the question "Thumbnail View" you refer to a new DWORD value and Hexadecimal value for a Registry key. How do you achieve this?

A.  I should not have assumed it would be known. Apologies all round...

When adding either a DWORD value : String value : Binary value : Multi-String value or Expandable value you can right click in the window where this new value is to appear and you are given these five choices. You can also go to Edit||New on the toolbar. Clicking on a choice brings up an insert box (as if a new folder) into which you type the name of the new value. Double clicking on the name allows you to enter either a hexadecimal or decimal value which then appears in the "Data" column.

DON'T FORGET TO BACK-UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE YOU MESS WITH IT!

Too Many Scanners - Error
Q. I have only one scanner but in Device Manager several are shown. Can you tell me what causes this and how do I get rid of the surplus?

A.
It is a somewhat more advanced procedure to cure this problem so if you are not happy with messing about in the Registry, leave things alone. No harm should come to your PC so long as the 'right' scanner is selected.

The problem lies with the SCSI adapter mistakenly reporting multiple IDs and LUNs (Logical Unit Numbers). The following is based on a Microsoft KB article.

First, using a text editor (Notepad), open C:\Windows\Setupapi.log. (Assuming C:\ is your root directory) Click on the "Edit||Find" and type SCSI\Scanner, and then click "Find Next" to locate your scanner ID.

Note your scanner's hardware ID. The hardware ID that will be used for the new registry key later in this procedure will be the data that immediately follows the "SCSI\", up to the first comma (,), and not including later items. For best results, copy this data to the clipboard so you can paste it later. (For example, you would copy the following data:  Scanneragfa____arcus_ii________ )

Go to Start||Run and type regedit - hit OK

Locate, and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ScsiPort\SpecialTargetList

Click "Edit||New" and then click "Key".
Type (or paste - if you copied it to the Clipboard) the hardware ID of your scanner that you noted in step 3 for the name of the new key.
Click "Edit||New" again and then click "DWORD Value".
Type SetLunInCdb, and then press ENTER.
Click "Edit||Modify". Type 1, and then click OK.
Exit Registry Editor.

DON'T FORGET TO BACK-UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE YOU MESS WITH IT!

Taskbar - Tooltips Nuisance
Q. When I pass my cursor over a shortcut on my taskbar the pop-up Tooltip appears, but when I move the cursor away, part of the tooltip remains. I find this really annoying. Is there a way to cure it?

A. I know only one answer to this which may help. Right click the desktop and left click "Properties". Select the "Appearance" tab and click on "Effects". Alongside "Use the following transition effects for menus and tooltips" you will probably find it set to "Fade Effect". You can try changing this to "Scroll Effect" or disenabling it altogether by unchecking the adjacent checkbox.

Firewall - XP
Q. I understand that Windows XP has a built-in firewall. Can you explain how I use this.

A. XP's firewall is not as sophisticated as, say, Zonelab Pro, but is adequate in most cases and certainly better than nothing. It can be enabled or disenabled. If you have no other firewall, then it should most definitely be enabled as follows...

Left click My Computer||Control Panel||Network & Internet Connections. (If "Network & Internet Connections" is not showing, click on "Switch to Category View"). Left click "Network Connections". Right click on your default Internet connection and select "Properties". Select the "Advanced" tab and make sure the "Internet Connection Firewall" box is checked.

I strongly recommend that you read up on the firewall by clicking on "Learn more about Internet Connection firewall". Especially if you have any form of 'file sharing' enabled or you have a network set-up. If you have a network set-up, click on "Settings" or  "...Network Setup Wizard" to safely configure the firewall for a network enabled PC.

Clock Synchronization
Q. I am told that my PC's clock will automatically synchronise. This doesn't seem to happen as my clock is always running slow. Can you help?

A. Your clock can be configured to automatically synchronise. Double click the time in the systray. This displays your clock. Click on the "Internet Time" tab and enable "Automatically synchronise with an internet server". [Either server selected in the scroll down window will do the job].

Your clock will now synchronise once a week provided you are connected to the internet on the due date. If your pc misses its date, (because you weren't connected) you can force the synchronisation by clicking on "Update".

Blue Sub-folders in C:\Windows folder
Q. When I open Windows in Windows Explorer the top first 20+ folders are printed in blue and all begin with "$NtuninstallQ..."

Can you tell me what these folders are and should I delete them?

A.  These folders are related to the "Hotfixes" installed on your PC when Microsoft automatically updates. If you are happy with the updates you have and have no problems, then it is safe to delete them from this folder. If you are having a problem and you think it may have something to do with one of the updates, note the number and visit Microsoft Support Knowledge Base and check it out using the 'Q' number. If it is a problem, you can delete the update ("Hotfix") by clicking on the 'spuninst.exe" file in that folder.

Help & Support Won't Start
Q. Help. My Help & Support seems to have given up on me. When I click on it, the hour glass flashes for a second and then nothing.

A. If you've run a Registry Cleaner recently and enabled it to delete registry entries, then Help and Support will not run.  Most of these cleaners (All really) are likely to delete values you need to keep.  I suggest you visit, www.dougknox.com and go to the Windows XP section.  Look for "Fix Window XP Help" and download a small VB Script that will repair the damage done.

Scrollbar - Resizing.
Q. I have heard you can resize the scroll bar in XP. Is this true and if so, how?

A. Yes, it is true. Right click the desktop, select the "Appearance" tab, click on "Advanced" and in the top scroll menu (probably reading Desktop) scroll down to Scrollbar. You can adjust the size from there.

Clipart Fails to Insert in Word
Q.  When I go to 'Insert||Picture||Clipart' and in Clipart select the image and click on 'Insert' the square appears but the clipart does not insert. I'm left with just a blank square.

A.  Go to Tools||Options and on the 'View' tab disenable (untick) "Picture placeholders" This facility is generally used to enable fast scrolling in documents with a lot of graphics. Only a blank square will show where the image is meant to be. It is not a good idea to have this enabled when creating artwork as sometimes this will prevent the image appearing when inserting from Clipart.

Can't delete "Deleted Items" in Outlook Express
Q.
In Outlook Express 6, every time I go to empty my "Deleted Items" folder I get an error message saying Windows cannot delete 'deleted items'... Why is this and can you tell me how to correct it?

A. This is a maintenance problem - or I should say, lack of maintenance. OE, by default compacts folders to save disc space, working in the background, and while I recommend that this feature is switched off - for other reasons - when it is switched off, you must maintain OE manually or problems will begin to surface.

What you need to do now is to recreate your 'Deleted Items.dbx' file. (.dbx are e-mail files) Go to Tools||Options||Maintenance||Store Folder. This will locate your folders store. Write down its path, close OE and navigate to your Store. In the folder find and delete 'Deleted items.dbx'. The next time you launch OE the folder will be recreated and you should be back to normal.

I strongly recommend that you visit http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm and read up on maintaining OE.

Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips
Q. Can I get rid of the balloon tips that keep popping up in my sys tray every time I boot?

A.  Yes, but it means going into the Registry. Make sure you backup the registry or at least set a restore point before you start.

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3. Right-click inside the right pane and create a new DWORD value. Name it EnableBalloonTips.
4. Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0 (zero).
5. Quit Registry Editor and reboot.

This will disable Notification Area balloon tips but not balloon tips for specific programmes. You can re-enable balloon tips at a later date if you wish by changing the 0 to 1.

Clean Install Windows XP (Formatting HD)
Q.
I have had so many problems since trying to install Windows XP Home that I now need to reformat my hard drive and clean install XP. Can you help me with this?

A. I always recommend a clean install, especially if you are confident of doing it. For those less confident, when installing XP over the top of its predecessor, then be sure to follow this advice.

Uninstall and disconnect all peripherals - printers, scanner etc - and all the programmes you know you can reinstall. (Don't forget to have all the product keys you'll need). Create a folder to store updated drivers for everything then visit all programme and hardware manufacturers' websites and download XP compatible drivers and store them.

You should now have the minimum of problems, although a few minor headaches may arise. However, I'm confident you'll agree it was worth it.

On the other hand, a Clean Install is still the better way. Here, of course, you must backup everything for reinstallation after completion and disconnect all peripherals. And updated drivers will still be needed. The process is too long for this page, but excellent advice and instructions are avilable here - http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html. I suggest you print them off.

You will also find instructions at this location for setting the BIOS to boot from the Windows CD.

How do I disable Find Fast?
Q.
I have been told that Find Fast does more harm than good. Is there a way to  disable it? Whenever I uncheck it in msconfig/Startup, it just reappears.

A.  Find Fast is a Microsoft accessory that is supposed to speed up your pc by storing often used files in a special folder for quicker access. On modern much faster and more poweful pcs, however, all it does is consume resources with little or no benefit.

The correct way to disable Find Fast requires that you delete the Find Fast index files. To do this, use the following steps:

1.  On the Start menu, click Settings||Control Panel.
2.  In the Control Panel window, double-click Find Fast.
3.  In the "Index for documents in and below" list, click the first item.
4.  On the Index menu, click Delete Index.

5.  In the Delete Index dialog box, click OK.
6.  When you are prompted whether to delete the index, Click OK.
7.  Repeat steps 3 to 6 until no more indices are listed.
8.  On the Index menu, click 'Close And Stop'. Then, click OK to stop Find Fast.
Then, do the following:
Remove the Microsoft Find Fast shortcut from the StartUp folder (typically in the Windows folder in the Start Menu\Programs folder).

Reactivating Windows XP
Q.
I am going to have to reinstall my operating system following a disastrous hard drive crash or move it to a new computer. What happens when I am asked to "Activate" my copy of Windows XP which came with the existing computer?

If you move your copy of Windows XP to a new computer, it has to be reactivated. This is done by telephoning your local Microsoft Corpn office and receiving a special number and instructions. However, you do not need to reactivate Windows when reinstalling to a reformatted or new hard-drive on the same computer provided no changes/additions to your hardware (periferals for example) have been made after reinstalling Windows and before "Activating" is usually required.

Carry out the following instructions to reinstall on the same computer without the need to reactivate.

  1. Go to "My Computer" and bring up your 'C' drive. Make sure 'hidden' files are visible.
  2. Go to:  C:\Windows\System32 folder
  3. Locate these two files:  "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" and copy them to a safe external location like a floppy, memory stick or CD.
  4. After you have reinstalled Windows XP, click "No" when asked if you want to activate Windows
  5. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (keep pressing F8 as Windows starts to boot) and select "SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal" when asked.
  6. Go back to "My Computer" and bring up your 'C' drive
  7. Go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder
  8. Find the two files:   "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" (they may have disapeared but make sure) and rename them to "wpaold.dbl" and "wpaold.bak"
  9. Now copy your original "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" files from wherever you placed them into the C:\Windows\System32 folder
  10. Go to msconfig (Start//Run// type 'msconfig' and hit OK) and check you are not booting into Safe Mode
  11. Restart your computer.
Windows XP is now reinstalled without the need to reactivate.

Word & Excel - File already open.
Q. When ever I try to open a Word or Excel file I get a message stating that the file is already open. In Word I'm asked if I want to make a copy but in Excel, I'm told to close one when I only have one open. There are no other users on my pc. Can you help?

A.  You need to recreate the file associations in Word and Excel. To do this go to Start||Run and type the following one at a time, hitting OK after each:

winword /r      OK
excel /regserver                OK

If you also use Access and Powerpoint enter the following:

powerpnt /regserver             OK
msaccess /regserver            OK

Note there is a space before the /

Outlook Express - Make default
Q. No matter what I do, I cannot get Outlook Express to stay as my default mail handler. When I click on "Make Default" and then try my Mailwasher, I get an error message something like "...there is no default mail handler on this machine."

Can you help, please?

A. Go to Start||Run and click on Browse. Navigate to "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe". Click on 'Open'. Hit your keyboard space-bar once and type /reg. Hit OK.

Outlook Express - Hyperlinks Not Working
Q. I am using OE.6. When I try to use a hyperlink in messages I receive, nothing happens. Can you help?

A.  Outlook Express is incorporated with Internet Explorer and needs Internet Explorer to be the default browser. Otherwise you will need to use Outlook, which is part of the Office suite, or another e-mail client. If IE is your default browser then you may well need to repair the file association between IE and OE.

To do this go to Start/Run and type: REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL and hit OK then reboot your PC.

Now launch Internet Explorer. Go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and click on "Reset Web Settings".

Now go to Windows Explorer and click on Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Scroll to URL:HyperTextTransfer Protocol. Click on Advanced/Edit.  Check under "Application used to
perform action". This should read: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Start-up On Boot.
Q. I want a new application to run when I boot but I can't find where to place it. Can you help?

A. Place the .exe file that launches the app here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. If you want to restrict the start up just for yourself, place it in your username instead of All Users.

Trojans - Porn Sites
Q. I visited a couple of porn sites recently - not to join but out of curiosity - and since then I've noticed my PC has slowed down and sometimes hangs when I'm surfing. Could this be coincidence, or is there something I may have done for which I am being punished?

A.
I have slightly changed the question although its meaning remains unchanged. Yes, you are probably being punished but not for some moral transgression. You have been indulging in unprotected surfing. Porn sites especially, and many similar highly commercial sites, will often plant trojans on your PC without your knowledge. In simple terms, trojans and worms are generally just a pain, but often can be much more than that as they are capable of transmitting lots of info from your hard-drive to the sender, including highly confidential data that you may think is hidden and even keyboard logging when passwords and the like can become visible. And these sites are not the only ones looking for unprotected pcs. The average time an unprotected pc lasts while on-line before being compromised is 20 minutes!

The answer is to install the latest version of a good virus scanner and firewall and immediately scan your hard-drives. My personal recommendation is McAfee for virus protection and ZoneAlarm Pro for the firewall. (Norton is probably marginally better than McAfee but going by the complaints I receive and read about, has too many conflicts for my book). With these running, you will be warned of any attempts to place unfriendly files on your PC and probably that they have been deleted, if not safely quarantined.

It's money well spent - and not much money, at that!
Fax Console (Installing)
Q.
My fax console has suddenly died on me. Whereas I used to be able to simply open the document and go via "Send to" this no longer works.   When I open Fax Console, under "Send a Fax, Receive a fax" etc, all are greyed out.

Do you know of a way I can recover the situation?

A. You need to install (or reinstall) Fax Console. Go to Start//Control Panel//Add or Remove Programs and click on Add/Remove Windows Components. Check the box next to "Fax Services", click "Next" and close when the installation is finished. You will need to reconfigure, which is quite simple.

Outlook - Accessing Blocked Attachment
Q
I am using Outlook 2003 and have just received an attachment that I was expecting. The problem is, it has been blocked with the words "Unsafe Attachment" Now I can't get to it. Can you help?

A You don't say what type of attachment it is but it will most certainly be an executable file such as .exe, dll, vbs, zip or other. One way is to edit the registry by inserting a new string value to the appropriate Registry Key that will unblock the extension that your file is using. However, I do not recommend this as it unblocks every file with that extension and could easily allow a malicious e-mail through - even from a friend.

I think a better way is a work-around. If you are expecting an e-mail attachment, then a little work is worth it and you should know its extension - .zip for example. Have the sender change the file name by altering the extension from .zip to .txt. (A warning is displayed but hit "Yes"). When you receive it, it will pass the blocker as all blockers allow .txt files. (Unless specifically configured to block all). You then right click the attachment and save it to your hard-drive after changing the extension back to its original.  All should now work fine and your safety net remains intact.
MS WORD (2000) - Inserting Page Borders (Bottom Line Missing)
Q
I have been trying to insert a border around the entire page but when I print it the bottom line is always missing. Page Setup is set to default. How can I cure this?

A   Unfortunately, I also find this process confusing - and irritating. The only way I know of is: in "Format||Borders and Shading" select "Page Border||Options" and under   "Measure from" select "Text". Set margins all at '4 pt'. Keep these low or something else happens!!

In Page Setup set the bottom margin to at least 2.3cm (1 inch).

As a work-around (a method I prefer) you can use a Text Box.

Go to "View" and select "Headers and Footers". Insert a Text Box and drag it to the top left corner where you want your border to start and then resize the Text Box to the bottom right to fill the page. (You gain about 0.5cm of bottom margin over the orthodox method).

You can format the Text Box in the normal way - choosing style, colour and thickness of the lines - but you can't use "Artistic" borders.

When you are done, go to "Print Preview" in the "File" menu (or click the magnifying glass) and check you have not gone too close to the bottom of the page. If the bottom line is missing, you can inch it up until it appears.

Exit "Headers and Footers" and you will have a border nicely set in place.

A third way, but a bit Heath Robinson, is to use Clip Art and search "borders". Mess with these by turning them vertical and horizontal etc to achieve what you are looking for.

Transferring Very Large Folders
Q
I am trying to transfer a 5gb folder to an external hard-drive but keep getting the message there is insufficient space available. It is a 80gb drive with 70gb available. Can you help?

A It appears you have a FAT32 system which has a limit of 4gb. You can convert your Windows XP system to NTFS (a much better system) but, while conversion is relatively straight forward, if you get it wrong, you can't go back. Clearly, you need to be very careful. Go here for full details...

Clearing the Title Bar in Internet Explorer
Q  Is there any way I can remove the advertising banner on my Internet Explorer's title bar. I find it really annoying when I did not want it in the first place.

A  Yes, ISPs are the most likely culprits but some other programmes also will infringe on your wishes this way. The answer is to go to Start//Run and type rundll32.exe iedkcs.dll.Clear.

Invalid Product Key
Q  I bought a pc off a friend. He knows little or nothing about computers so has never updated Windows. I decided to update and started with SP1. However, I keep getting the message "The product Key used to install Windows is invalid. Please contact.....etc". This has me completely lost as the system works okay. Can you tell me what is happening?

A  Almost certainly the version of Windows you are using is pirated. SP1 looks for a particular code whch is always part of a valid ID. If it is not found, the notice you are getting is displayed and you cannot install any updates. Your only option is to purchase a valid Product Key.

XP to Windows 7 Upgrade
Q  I am considering upgrading to Windows 7 when it is launched. Is this a good idea and what should I be aware of before making the switch.

A  It is certainly a good idea but there are a number of issues to consider, many of them quite serious. There is insufficient space here to give a full and fair answer so I have placed a separate file on the site which you can access from here. It will open in any word processor. You can click "Run" or "Save".
