FIRST IMPRESSIONS

As you approach the Manor, you see a cluster of cottages and barns set around a handsome Cotswold farmhouse. Flagstones lead to an arched front door made of old English oak. Dry stone walls border lawns and gardens full of flowers and shrubs. Beyond the gardens, rolling fields spread as far as the eye can see. You instantly recognise that here is a place of tranquillity. A place where the past is always present.

WHAT'S IN A NAME

Calcot is a manor-house by name but a farmstead by nature. The hard edge of rural life has been softened by the pursuit of pleasure, but it is still a living changing place, in tune with its surroundings. A place of history, too; long ago Cistercian monks farmed the land here. Today their 14th century tithe barn - one of the oldest in England - still stands, a living link to the past.

CREATURE COMFORTS

What does the traveller look for in an English country hotel, good food, creature comforts on every hand? Calcot Manor offers these in plenty. What makes Calcot special is the warm courtesy of its staff and the restful charm of the buildings. Balances between formality and friendliness, luxury and 'liveability' - these are the touchstones for today's hotel.

CALCOT SPA

The Calcot Health & Leisure Spa opened in June 2003. The Spa was designed by leading spa specialist "Corporate Edge" whose clients include Champneys, Cannons and the Amida Spa. They have created an exterior that is sympathetic to the very strong tradition of Cotswold architecture, and in doing so maximised the use of local craftsmen and materials. The brief for the interior focused on combining a classical style with a more contemporary feel, concentrating on simplicity, proportion and detail. The designers were asked to use natural materials where possible, and to create a calm interior that reflected the beauty of the surroundings.

This new facility offers a 16 metre indoor pool, sauna, steam room, garden spa pool, fitness room, tennis, exercise studio and relaxation room which are available to residents and private members. In addition, we offer a wide range of health and beauty treatments in one of our 7 treatment rooms and these are available to everyone.

DINING AT CALCOT

Calcot_cons.jpg (31236 bytes) The pretty Conservatory restaurant draws pleasure-seekers from far and wide. Menus follow the seasons, marrying robust local produce with more delicate exotica. However grand or simple the food you choose, the quality remains constant. Under the guiding influence of International Chef, Michael Croft, dishes are as satisfying on the palate as they are seductive to the eye.

A nice touch to the starters menu helps the diner to choose "ample" or "generous" - in anticipation of what can follow - and includes such delights as Smoked Venison Braesola with Rocket and Shaved Reggiano at £5.50 or £7.50 and Oven Baked Buffalo Mozzarella with Prosciutto and Grilled Aubergines at £6.25 or £8.75.

Main courses are equally delectable, and delicately served. A special recommendation is the Osso Bucco, a slowly Braised Shin of Veal with Tomato, Parsley and Garlic at £17.00 - and a rarity in the Cotswolds - Whole Dover Sole 'Meuniere' at £21.00. New potatoes are served with each dish and an excellent choice of vegetables and salads can be added at £2.00 each.

Desserts require little observation except to say each choice could be the chef's speciality, with the prices ranging between £4,50 and £5.00, and £6.00 for the cheese board.

There is an exceptional choice of wines, and another rarity, a choice of Vintage Ports, including Sandeman's 1977 and Warre's 1977, each at £8.50 a glass.

gumstool_1.jpg (4598 bytes) The versatility of the Chefs at Calcot Manor is easily put to the test in the lively atmosphere of the local pub, as The Gumstool is lovingly described.
Here a simpler, more rustic culinary idiom holds sway, a celebration of British food at its best. This is the place to enjoy quality draft beers and a game of dominoes, as your meal is prepared. In the summer, leisurely al fresco dining on the terrace is a natural choice.

The quality of the food is not less than the hotel's Conservatory restaurant, although of differing choices, and the wine list is as comprehensive. One can, however, eat at a respectably lower cost.

The choice is extensive and well balanced, with a two course meal for two averaging about £30.00.

ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED

Your stay at Calcot Manor can be as active or reclusive as you can make it. Many head for the swimming pool, others for the tennis courts and croquet lawn, while some seek out the quiet golf courses perched on the edge of the Cotswolds. Free spirits just saddle up one of our bicycles and take to the open road, returning later to the comfort of soft sofa cushions and a pre-dinner pick-me-up.
