Wotton-under-Edge |
| Wotton-under-Edge is till, as the old name
describes it, a settlement by a wood under the (Cotswold) Edge, in Gloucestershire. It is
a self-contained and picturesque town, a working town with no pretensions and a warm and
welcoming atmosphere. Many walkers come through Wotton-under-Edge as they travel the Cotswold Way, which goes literally through the centre of town, right up the main street. Many shops of items of interest, maps, guides, postcards, souvenir, rain hats and plasters for sore feet! There are hostelries and teashops to offer sustenance, somewhere warm and welcoming to stay the night and you will find that the greengrocers are very happy to sell one or two apples to crunch as you go. For the less ambitious, there are many shorter walks around the town and leaflets describing these are available from most of the shops and inns. |

The beautiful Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin peeks above a
typical Cotswold stone cottage near the bottom of the town. Many parts of this delightful
church date from the 13th. Century. The church is usually open in the mornings as well as
for daily worship. Wotton has a long and well documented history and those so inclined will find much to interest them in the town, which has a varied yet harmonious architectural character. |
| We
recommend that you take a little time out to visit the Heritage Centre in The Chipping,
which houses an interesting museum and well stocked research room. Run by the Town's
Historical Society, the museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10.00 a.m to 5.00
p.m, (4.00 p.m. in winter) closing one hour for lunch between 1.00 and 2.00 p.m. The
centre is also open on the first Sunday afternoon of each month from 2.00 to 5.00 p.m, May
to October. Staffed by volunteers, there is a Tourist Information Point to help with your
plans. The museum's displays are changed regularly, making repeat visits worthwhile. You can find out a lot more about our town by
