In one of the most beautiful locations in the Cotswolds, surrounded by unspoilt countryside, lies the tiny village of Upper Framilode. The Ship Inn is the only pub in town and, for business and holiday travellers alike, is ideally located about 10 miles south of Gloucester and close to Junction 13 on the M5 Motorway.
The Ship is getting on for 150 years old and is steeped in nostalgia. In the old days bargees (barge owners) would congregate here while waiting for the tide to let them pass through to the Sharpness/Gloucester canal. And yes, as you may well ask, the canal at this point was tidal in those days. Today, however, this part of the local canal network, running alongside The Ship, is little used but does add a tranquil and leisurely dimension to the delightfully rural atmosphere.

Comfort and cosiness exist throughout the year at The Ship Inn but especially when a warm log fire crackles in the grate while you enjoy a welcome pint and good company.

This tranquil villiage pub is one of those wonderful finds you come across from time to time. Set next to the picturesque Stroudwater canal, The Ship Inn reflects the old charm sadly missing from many of todays mass market establishments.

A favourite with CAMRA members, The Ship carries beers locally sourced with real ales prominent, (you must try the Hobgoblin) and with the roaring log fire its just a perfect place to be on a cold night in February.

Top london chef Kieth Gardner has recently joined the management team and his menus reflect his passion for cooking. Red snapper, sea bass and fresh s
hellfish are delivered daily but Kieth also offers good old fashioned English cuisine such as homemade faggots, lambs liver and onions and, of course, his signature dish Martha Gardners steak and kidney pie (a recipe learned from his grandmother).

Sunday lunch is a good time to meet the locals. Traditional roasts are favourite, with smaller portions always available for the children, as long as you can drag them away from feeding the ducks, swans and signets swimming in the canal. In the warmer months dining alfresco is the order of the day with seating for 50 overlooking the canal, and children have their own play area keeping them out from under your feet.

Close to Slimbridge, Gloucester and an ideal stop over for the Cheltenham race meet, rooms are all ensuite with tv and tea and coffee making facilities. Prices range from £25 per night and reservations are recommended, especially in the summer months.
It is always wise to book well in advance.
