Set right alongside the Gloucester to Bristol Road (A38) The Elms at Stone is very easy to find. And having found this excellent family hotel, you will quickly realise how fortunate you have been in choosing to lodge here. Age is nothing if it does not influence the character and ambience of a place, and at this early17th century converted farmhouse, it does so richly. Originally belonging to the Berkeley Castle estate, much of the original building remains. Twisted beams, log fires in stone fire-places, and the beautifully kept gardens soothe away the pains of travel, and in no time at all, you feel as if you have been there for ever.

Food at The Elms is all freshly prepared in the kitchen. "Everything is 'Home Made',"  Alison and Alistair Rawnsley insist. And when one samples their dishes, it is clearly a very good thing too. While breakfast is served all day (with the sleepy heads in mind, I wager) the choices are well balanced and of the highest standard.

THE RESTAURANT

Albeit small, as hotels go, the Elms boasts a most exceptional, friendly and intimate restaurant. There is a very good a la carte menu with choices beyond all expectations.

Including, for the vegetarian, often the less well catered for diner, Vegetarian Filo Parcel - Tomato, Spinach and Ricotta Cheese Filo Parcel, served on a bed of Tomato and Fresh Basil Sauce. A very satisfying dish, away from the usual vegetarian choices.
